Folly and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
The saga started with a solitary photograph, arguably the most significant ever taken of a member of the monarchy.
There stood the Earl of Inverness, arm-in-arm a young woman, while a companion grinned conspiratorially in the rear.
Lacking that photograph, shot at a social event in 2001, who would have believed the claims of a adolescent who declared she was transported across the ocean and forced to have perfunctory sexual encounters with a member of the royal family?
A curious, revealing move by someone who had openly claimed to have no known about her, asserted he could no have had relations with her, and yet provided millions of his mother's funds to settle a protracted court action.
Over a Decade of Controversy
In this context, discussions of the monarchy acting firmly to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This affair has persisted for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and an additional photo of Andrew walking congenially with a notorious individual emerged.
- Hubris: For what duration did his siblings, possibly even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
- Problematic Connections: They must have understood, if his staff and the law enforcement were doing their jobs, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he unabashedly hosted them to royal residences.
- Monetary Excess: If the household did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.
Trips were listed in official documents: helicopter flights from the palace to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, chartered planes instead of commercial flights, all for the convenience of "the travel enthusiast".
Existence of Entitlement
Furthermore the presumption which required respect when he walked into a room or the extreme obsession about his designations used on his correspondence in communication to his friends.
He could get away with it while his parent, who unaccountably spoiled him, was still alive. The sovereign did at least strip him of public duties and honorary colonelcies in the wake of his disastrous and, as revealed, untruthful public statement six years ago.
Latest Events
It was only in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the issuance of books giving more disturbing information of his actions and that of his associates.
More information have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could escape being untruthful about his relationship with a convicted criminal.
People (and the journalists) were far more perceptive of the royal family. There was no one of any significance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.
Institutional Fears
The more intelligent royals understood that. The one imperative is to pass on the crown, if not as previously at least intact and unstained.
Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of earlier rulers, demonstrating they are useful, accountable and responsive to their citizens.
He was placing all that in peril in an era when respect and secrecy is no longer enough.
The Fallout
Finally, the notoriously indecisive monarch was pressured additional. There was little choice. The institution had lost control of the narrative.
Currently the removal of honorifics and the persistent and life-long public humiliation that will pain Andrew most severely.
- Reduction: Reduced to just a commoner
- Historical Precedent: The first member to lose his titles in contemporary era
- Military Service: Notably hurtful given his service in the Falklands war
He continues to be a counsellor of state, on paper able to stand in for the king, and he is still eighth in line to the monarchy, but neither of these will truly come to pass.
Coming Developments
Will people he meets still acknowledge him? Will they still make mistakes and call him Sir? Would they say Sir,
Of course, he is not retiring to a common area, but to the royal family's vast grounds at a monarchical property.
In that place, he will be supplied by the king with one of the royal residences and given some form of personal stipend.
This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit far, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.
Outstanding Concerns
The situation continues. There are still records in the custody of overseas authorities to be disclosed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Might legislators request additional information
- Monetary Probe: Or investigate the waste of public money
- Legal Possibility: There may even be a police investigation into his conduct
Possibly for the time being the reputational impact to the crown is restricted. The narrative from the palace was plainly that the stripping of honorifics was what the king, and notably other senior family members, sought.
Altered Approach
The cessation of pretence that Andrew was acting willingly. And, remarkably, the short statement showed plainly that the royals were supporting the complainant's account of incidents.
Even more, for the initial instance they ultimately showed regard for the survivors: "The censures are judged required, regardless of the reality that he continues to deny the accusations against him."
In the end it is arrogance, self-interest and laziness that will undermine the monarchy. In his stupidity, personal excess and greed, Andrew appears never to have grasped that reality.
