Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
