Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
