New York Unveils Online Platform for Citizens to Submit Immigration Images After Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has launched a fresh reporting form asking residents to submit photos and videos of immigration raids across New York. This move comes just a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking mass demonstrations.

US Citizens Held In ICE Operation

A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Protests occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a statement.

"For those who saw and recorded federal operations yesterday, I urge you to share that evidence with the authorities. We are dedicated to examining these reports and investigating any legal breaches."

Portal Features

The form includes fields to send visual evidence of the incident, as well as a section to specify location information. When submitting, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The enforcement action, which observers say involved over fifty government officers, occurred in a popular area of NYC where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – often to visitors.

Videos of the incident reveal several masked and armed federal agents securing and holding a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Masses of locals followed the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Political Response

During a news conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He noted the individuals were let go on the following day with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This constitutes a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the troops to stop violence that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the political contenders condemned the operation, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a contender declared.

The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern as well.

"Federal officers targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, covered personnel and tactical gear to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had nothing to do with public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and neighborhoods," said the president of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, external research has revealed that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the present government.

Recent Pattern

Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and around the country lately.

An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are widespread including claims of force and abusive practices.

Most recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups claimed medical neglect of expectant mothers in detention centers.
