Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He fought the law and the legal system prevailed.

Two months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally seems headed to prison.

Expected Jailing

The found-guilty plotter – who has been living under house arrest in his mansion while a number of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, amidst growing rumors that he will be sent to a well-known high-security prison.

Past Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative ex- paratrooper displayed minimal sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we provide those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, end of story. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up there, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week toured the complex in an apparent bid to prevent the supreme court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute digestive ailments – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the last election race – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “That’s virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Backers React

The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions before the former president’s predicted detention.

Writing in a major daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its past”.

“It is an unfairness that eats away the souls of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Reaction

It is possibly correct considering the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his expected incarceration has also pleased the feelings of many others who think he should be jailed for planning to block his successor from taking power – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a representative for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive respectful treatment – but proper handling while incarcerated. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the tough handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always asserted that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to inspect a penitentiary to discover what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting conduct”.

Potential Prison Facilities

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 prisoners, his more likely location appears to be a close prison for police officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning official residence, about a short distance away.

As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a TV and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report suggested.

Ideological Responses

He condemned the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his future in the {
