The $150m Players Transforming a Highlight Machine
This year's National Basketball Association campaign begins now, signaling the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie pair of most prominent hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence signals a changing of the guard, as Australian guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of Australia’s highest sporting earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for playing time around the league, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
After lengthy discussions with the Chicago Bulls, the guard ultimately inked his new deal worth US$100 million ($153m) over four years recently. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for his role and profile as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old enters this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the start of last campaign, he watched as his former squad stormed to the NBA championship without him. As the Chicago look to reach the postseason in the weaker Eastern Conference, he will have to show his scoring and defensive skills are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard agreed to the same deal as his counterpart recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Hawks player's trajectory has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best perimeter defenders, and led the league in takeaways with three per game – over one whole steal per game higher than the tally of second place.
Performing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be effective this campaign as a playmaking option and elite defender as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was below league average last year, and continue to enhance his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most versatile talents.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Indiana wing Furphy has emerged as a crowd favorite in Indiana following a succession of spectacular dunks in pre-season. His athletic displays prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the mid-season dunk contest could be a possibility.
After logging just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his debut season, the ex- Maribyrnong College student is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might favor youth following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native dropped in the NBA Draft down to the second round, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers selected him. The Cavaliers are favourites to make the NBA finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a first-year player drafted in the late picks to see much court time. But the Australian has earned time in exhibition play, and his NBA-ready shot gives him a chance to contribute.
Minutes Crunch Ahead for Experienced Group
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting five spot in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will be out for the start of the season after a surgical procedure.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent minutes if the team become competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s summer shoulder procedure has left him without a timeline to come back. The 24-year-old still has a deal for the upcoming year, but will not want to give his colleagues at the rebuilding Hornets too much advantage. And a physical issue has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has been absent for important pre-season chances in Dallas.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, game action this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but appears to be little more than a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be developed by the Wolves through their G-League team. Fellow first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to win playing time with his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
Should anyone question Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a training clip posted on his accounts recently, showing the 37-year-old is still sharp and determined on securing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Although he posted on Instagram recently to reject suggestions he was done, the 29-year-old – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
