The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
