The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
