As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were injured.”

Background and Recent Strikes

The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military buildup.

Only on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Actions Amid Scrutiny

The administration has faced growing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.

While the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
